JOIN YIG!

Is YIG the right fit for you?

We would argue that YIG is beneficial to everyone! No matter what your political affiliation is (or even if you don't have one!), we welcome everyone into our program. If you're still unsure about joining, ask yourself some of the following questions...

  • Are you a student in AP Government, AP US History, and/or Civics?

  • Do you have a passion for Forensics, Debate Club, or journalism?

  • Do you have an idea of what you would want to see changed in society?

  • Do you want to express yourself and your ideas?

  • Are you looking to meet teens from across the state?

  • Are you ready for your voice to be heard?

Why should you join?

  • It’s a fun, challenging, non-partisan program filled with lots of opportunities for leadership.

  • It’s an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends from across the state.

  • You get to spend a weekend in the state capitol, sitting in the same seats that our legislators do by day and having fun by night.

  • You get to express yourself and practice the fine art of debating.

  • You are encouraged to form your own opinions and find your voice.

  • You get to hear from guest speakers who serve Wisconsin every day.

  • It helps you to build confidence and character.

  • It’s a great resumé-builder.

  • It’s the experience of a lifetime!

OK, I'm in...now what?

Joining Youth in Government is easy! Anyone in grades 7-12 looking for a new, fun experience can sign up for YIG. There is no prerequisite class and you don't need to have a previous knowledge of anything political. In fact...you don't even have to be a YMCA member!

Your first step will be to determine which delegation is closest to you so that you can plan to start attending their meetings. Visit the page for our current program year to see a list of active delegations. Each delegation has a different meeting schedule, set to fit their students' needs. Most delegations begin to meet for the year in September/October and meet once per week...but you can join anytime in the fall

Don't see your community listed?

No problem! We offer a distance program, called Virtual Delegations, for interested delegates who do not currently have a local delegation with which to meet. Click here to learn more!

In 6th grade but eager to get involved?

You're in luck! We offer a program just for you! Our Apprentice program is designed as an introduction to the Wisconsin YMCA Youth in Government program for sixth grade students. Click here to learn more!
